Real:
True: not merely ostensible, nominal, or apparent.
Existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious.
Being an actual thing; having objective existence; not imaginary.
Being actually such; not merely so-called.
Genuine: not counterfeit, artificial, or imitation; authentic.
Adoptive families are every bit as real as biological ones.
Yet the word real continues to be used to describe biological ties.
It makes me cringe.
Every adoptive parent would say:
Can I hear an AMEN!?

ReplyDeleteBeing a parent isn't about giving birth, it's getting up at 3am when your kid has an ear-ache, watching really bad kindergarten plays and staying up late worrying when they're out on a date or something.
That is the best question. If you can touch them and they breath, talk, have blood running through your veins and take care of you then of course they are real. The only way they wouldn't be real is if they were stuffed by the taxidermist. =)
