Thoughts on your soon-coming package of noise and happiness:
ReplyDeleteSo I checked the back of a package of snack food (the usefulness of this actual product as a “snack”, let alone the accuracy of its classification as “food” is highly questionable) called “Baken Ets” (which have absolutely no bacon and no trace of ets, either). They are referred to as “flavored fried pork skins”, probably because “Pork Rinds” is (1) copyrighted and (2) pigs don’t grow on trees, therefore, they cannot have rinds. This may be a little beyond the standard cranial gymnastics performed by those people who buy this particular item, but worthy of note to academics, who have very little else to do.
There are 3 servings per bag, at 80 calories a serving. 240 calorie bag of snack food. That’s less than a Snickers bar. Good deal so far. Now we get to the rest of the bag. 470 mg of sodium…PER SERVING. That’s 60% of your sodium intake for the ENTIRE day. 1410 mg. As if that weren’t enough, more than half the calories in the bag- 135 of ‘em- come from fat. Of course, it’s pig skin. What, you thought this was diet food? This is not the weird part.
The strangeness comes in on the “Protein” section. Amazingly enough, there is indeed protein in the material formerly used to make footballs- which is in part the reason why every porcine high school and collegiate mascot either looks angry or is running like crazy to get away. But the weirdness is as follows: The protein content of each serving is listed as “7 g”. That means a total of 21 g of protein in every bag. If not for the MSG, salt and yeast, this would seem a perfect “Atkins” or other high-protein diet food. Curiously, however, the bag’s label immediately follows the announcement of 7 g of protein with “Not a significant source of protein”. 21 grams is “not a significant source” of protein? That’s the same amount of protein as in three ounces of any meat, fish, poultry or cheese, five tablespoons of peanut butter, or three large eggs. Seems significant to me.
The amount of protein recommended per day by many sports nutritionists is 1.6-1.7 g per kilogram of body weight, or about 0.73-0.77 g per pound. For a 200-pound athlete, that’s only 145-154 g of protein a day. So eating one bag of these skin-rind-pork-salt things is about 15% of the protein needed by an athlete, let alone your average American (who is not an athlete, and tends to be more like a pork rind).
My suspicion? I think the lawyers of the company selling these Rindy Salted Skin-Porks are concerned that people will use their product as a substitute for meat and other proteins, and that upon their deaths, their estates will come back and sue the creators of Oversalted Porky Skin Fries for deceptively advertising their product in such a way that the typical lobotomized amoeba might be able to claim that it thought Sodiummy Pork Fried Skinny Rinds were a high protein diet food. Which means that if a plaintiff can find the jurors from OJ Simpson’s first trial, the chances of a multi-billion-dollar victory are pretty good.
The moral of this story: Send your soon-to-be adopted child to law school. Then the kid can support both of you well into your old age, until you die of a bad case of prawns or something. Of course, the poor child will have to obtain an advanced degree in Weaselology, but you just make the kid read this post, and the urge to either graduate with honors from Harvard Law School or hide in a box until the weirdness goes away will overwhelm your new child.
WOW! That's what I get for not checking blogs in two weeks! I'm so, so, so THRILLED for you guys! That's so amazing! I'll be checking a lot more often for updates now! Congrats again! Enjoy the ride!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteSigh. I wish they had a countdown for foster babies....
We just have to wait for the phone call and be ready in hours.
