"The 2010 session of the Utah State Legislature began on January 25, and will run through March 11. Because the session is so short, things move quickly. Last week, two bills aimed at discouraging abortions unanimously passed through House Committee Meetings. United Families Utah was there to testify in support of these bills, and monitor others that impact Utah families.
We're up on the hill speaking for you. But it's even more important that YOU speak for yourself! Please find the Representative and Senator from your district, and write them an email or give them a call. (See below for the bills we are watching.)

HB12 C. Wimmer, Criminal Homicide and Abortion Amendments
This bill closes the loophole that allowed a Vernal woman to be released after hiring a man to beat her in an attempt to terminate her 7 month pregnancy. This bill defines abortion strictly as a medical procedure carried out by a physician (or a substance used under the direction of a physician) and removes the protective exemption for a mother who seeks an illegal abortion. It passed the passed the House 59-12 on Jan 29, and has been introduced in the Senate. Please ask your Senator to vote in favor of this bill.
HB200 C. Wimmer, Informed Consent Amendments
Currently a woman seeking an abortion has a right to an ultrasound, but often she isn't aware that she has that right. This bill requires the doctor to inform her that she has the right to an ultrasound-and to see it and have it explained to her, if she chooses. This bill passed the House Health and Human Services Committee unanimously on January 29, and is being heard in the House. LifeNews.Com reports that 84% of women decide against an abortion after seeing an ultrasound of their baby. Here in Utah, it is 86%. Please ask your Representative and Senator to vote in favor of this bill."
